Thinking Out Loud

"Straight from the horse's mouth"
Oliver Bailey Co-Founder, Absurd

Meet the team: Danielle

Our newest team member.

The last 10 months has been an exciting period of growth at Absurd and as a result we’ve been working hard to find great people and grow our team (we’re still hiring by the way!). We’ve helped build a number of new products, delivered some key platform redesigns and rolled out releases across 16 countries in total. Whilst doing so we have also been planning projects for the next 12 months and beyond.

Our team now consists of designers, developers, researchers & strategic thinkers. Today I sat down with Danielle, our latest addition to the design team, to ask her about working at Absurd.

So, where did you work before Absurd?

I previously worked at BPP University as a UI Designer. BPP are a digitally-focussed university where I led the design of a number of their products such as Virtual Learning Environments across multiple platforms. Prior to that, I worked as a Designer for Flannels, working on their commerce platform.

What does your role consist of?

My role is to work closely with the experience design team and bring solutions to life visually.  I am constantly researching design trends and applying them in ways that work for the problems we are solving, considering the customer and the organisation they are interacting with.

My role sees me involved in stakeholder workshops at the beginning of a project, ensuring I have a deep level of understanding and insight into the brands that we are working with.

What’s the best thing about working at Absurd?

It’s a nice collaborative environment and office to work in - everybody supports each other. There’s also an interesting breadth of clients to work on with varied projects across all of them.

Describe your typical day?

There is no typical day.

Every day has been different since I started; from workshops and research, to concepts for new brands, new sites for established brands, as well as some internal projects. As we are a young business we are still designing our own tools and processes which is exciting to be a part of.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

Design-wise, probably our intranet because it’s our brand and so close to home - these things are always difficult!

It’s a different setup at Absurd to my last jobs; going from relatively corporate, in-house roles, to an agency environment. Whilst it’s more laid back at Absurd, it's a lot faster paced.

I’ve loved getting to know our clients and understanding how they work and what they are trying to achieve.

Why did you choose to work at Absurd?

The opportunity to join the company so early on, and be a part of its growth and development. There are a lot of exciting opportunities being discussed and i’m excited to see where the agency goes in the coming months and years. There’s a great energy within the agency.

Another thing that caught my interest was the focus on Service Design, I was keen to learn more about the methodologies used and how they can be applied to projects to improve the solutions i’m designing.

What are you most looking forward to getting involved with next at Absurd?

The new projects that are kicking off; I’m really enjoying working with multiple clients and industries. I had not had that opportunity before, always having designed for a specific industry.

We’re currently recruiting for a number of roles at Absurd, if you like the sound of the above and think you’d be a good fit, check out our current vacancies or get in touch jobs@thisisabsurd.co.uk
