About Calisen

Calisen is one of the UK's leading providers of smarter energy infrastructure and technology services, supporting the transition to a more flexible, sustainable energy system.

The organisation plays an important role across smart metering, asset management, data services, meter reading, EV charging infrastructure, solar, battery storage and other low-carbon technologies.

Operating in a highly regulated sector, Calisen serves a broad range of audiences with different needs, including consumers, energy suppliers, commercial partners, investors, employees and wider industry stakeholders.

That complexity means digital experiences need to do more than present information. They need to make Calisen's role in the energy transition understandable, credible and useful for people arriving with very different levels of knowledge and intent.

The challenge

Calisen's digital estate needed to support a complex organisation operating in a rapidly changing market.

Different audiences came to the site for different reasons: customers looking for support, suppliers evaluating infrastructure partners, investors seeking confidence, candidates exploring the business and stakeholders trying to understand Calisen's role in the UK's net-zero transition.

The challenge was not simply improving a website.

It was creating a clearer digital experience across a business with multiple services, brands, responsibilities and future growth opportunities.

The platform needed to improve information discovery, explain complex services, support customer engagement, strengthen recruitment and employer branding, communicate with investors and create a foundation for future digital initiatives.

Our approach

Absurd partnered with Calisen to create a clearer experience around audience needs, organisational priorities and future digital growth.

We began by understanding the different groups Calisen needed to serve and the questions each audience needed the digital experience to answer.

That meant looking across user journeys, content structures, service propositions and organisational requirements to identify where complexity was creating friction.

Using this insight, we shaped an information architecture that made Calisen's services easier to understand while giving each audience a clearer route to relevant content.

The work balanced customer needs with business objectives, helping Calisen communicate its role in smart energy infrastructure while supporting practical journeys across customer support, supplier engagement, recruitment, investor communications and group services.

Product thinking was central to the approach. Rather than treating the platform as a fixed corporate site, we focused on creating scalable foundations that could support new content, future propositions and digital initiatives as the business evolved.

Umbraco provided the CMS flexibility needed by internal teams, but the strategic focus was broader: helping Calisen build a more coherent digital foundation for a complex, regulated and fast-moving sector.

Results

The work gave Calisen a clearer, more scalable digital experience across its core audiences.

Customers and stakeholders could better understand Calisen's services, find relevant information more easily and move through journeys with less friction.

The improved structure also created stronger foundations for content governance, making it easier for internal teams to manage complex information across services, audiences and group initiatives.

By creating a more coherent digital architecture, the platform supported clearer stakeholder communication, stronger customer engagement and greater flexibility for future growth.

The challenge was not explaining energy infrastructure. It was making a complex organisation understandable to every audience it serves.

Outcomes

Calisen gained a digital foundation designed to support customer experience, organisational alignment and future transformation.

The work helped simplify a complex proposition without reducing its strategic importance, giving the business a clearer platform for communicating with customers, partners, investors, employees and industry stakeholders.

The result is a more scalable digital experience that supports Calisen's role in the energy transition while creating stronger foundations for future products, services and growth.
